Certain individuals are of the opinion that Citizenship education should be the sole responsibility of schools, while some other people think it is the work of the parents only. In my own opinion, I believe that teaching children to be good citizens is a shared responsibility of both the parents and the school. I will expatiate on this in the preceding paragraphs.
Firstly, parents are the ones who gave birth to these children and be with them till they reach the age of going to school. Therefore, they have a very important role to play in the early formation of their children. Every family has its own moral values, and it is from the family that children learn this. As children grow up, they learn respect, simple greetings, honesty and so on, from their parents and elders. Secondly, children learn from personal examples shown by their parents. For instance, when parents show hospitality to visitors, forgive one another, live peacefully and happily with everyone around them, their children will invariably learn to live that way. And if the reverse is the case, a hostile individual will be raised up. And this will be a nuisance to the society.
On the other hand, the school builds on the foundation laid by the family. Through the curricula and extra curricula activities done in the school, the students are being given a holistic formation. Through the subject like citizenship and Heritage studies, children are being taught to be good citizens of the country. They learn to live their lives in a responsible manner. By mixing up with other children from different backgrounds, they learn team work, learn to play together and do so many other things together.
In conclusion, the training of children should not be left for a particular group. Both parties should join hands together to bring them up for a better society.
