Band 5+: Some people think that social media platforms should be held responsible for the spread of misinformation. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often held that responsibility for the content published by account holders, including misinformation and baklash ought to be given to social media platfroms and they ought to be in charge of it in a legal way. I believe, this approach is not effective as it can lead to bigger problems such as and using it for different social campaigns to solve problems.

To start with, social media has become a significant part of every person in the modern world, who use these tools in their work, study and entertaining purposes. There are over billion users from different part of world who have signed up for reading and sharing their opinion with other members. But often some negative information is witnessed on these platforms that might be harmful for people in different aspects and hence, this sort of information should be certainly deleted by social media. Blaming legally on social media, however, is not appropriate action because it can lead to blocking these platforms themselves. At the end, individuals could lose the access to their accounts forever. So that is why it is much sustainable if social media itself will regulate all negative publicitions.

Another point to dicuss is that social media is an incredible tool for speaking out your opinion about social issues. The world is getting improved through people’s demand and these demand are often posted on social media platforms. If social media services were accused for any speech legally, it could lead to block or limit people of using social media accounts and convey their demand to the world. Thus, this radical approach might change the online communication and free speech of individuals into a negative side where people’s request is not reached to the authorities and solved.

In conclusion, it is often being argued that social media services should be liable for actions and hate posts of their users on platforms. I don’t agree with this statement since this action could have not positive impact on users themselves regarding to their free speech and access to daily things such as work, study and entertainment.
