In this day and age, playing sports is an important activity which is introduced to various age groups, especially for children. Opinions are divided on whether sports can help the youth develop competitiveness or it can encourage children to improve teamwork spirit. While in some circumstances, sport is necessary to teach students how to overcome challenges in life, I believe that teamwork in participating in physical activities is a more vital characteristic that children can learn from these activities.
On the one hand, a school of thought argues that training sport for children is the way to help them bring more sense of competition. To commence with, sport is a competitive activity which demands the individual’s advanced skills like dribbling or juggling in football or physical duration in marathon. Therefore, engaging in sporting events can be a method for the youth to present their personal skills and outperform other counterparts; through this way, children can be familiar with the harsh rivalry environment of life which helps them acquire several life skills and experiences. However, leading adolescents to approach athletic activities in a rivalrous way can exert a negative impact on children, especially on their mental health. According to an interview done by California university, many young people have to suffer from depression and stress because of competing with others in playing sports, which can decrease their performance and bring back unexpected achievements.
On the other hand, detractors of the abovementioned view, this is understandable why some people tend to agree that developing teammate spirit in participating in recreation activities is crucial for children. Chiefly, learning teamwork can help the youth improve their personal improvement by learning and acquiring knowledge from other players. Specifically, by realizing the problems and experience from those who are better, children can push their development sufficiently through learning from each other’s teammates. Furthermore, sporting activities can tighten the unity among team members, which can help to improve their performance in playing sports, upgrade the mental health and reduce stress level. This, in the long run can ensure a full-man development of children with empathy and understanding. A research by Beijing University has proved that many health diseases caused by pressure can be easily mitigated from playing sports which can upgrade the studying quality of children.
In conclusion, upon contemplating both viewpoints, I am steadfast in my conviction that developing teamwork spirit while engaging in sport events is more significant than promoting the youth to compete with each other. It can be seen that being rivalrous with other players can increase personal skills and reputation; however, being friendly with teammates and paying respect to them is the way to cultivate team unity.
