Many believe that the most effective method to tackle environmental issues is to escalate the price of petrol for motorcars. I totally disagree the point of view considering the substantial impact of a personal car to any individual, as well as the importance of public awareness that will affect the overall effectiveness of any measures taken. This essay will delve into the reasons in detail.

To commence, it is undisputable that people for the past decade are heavily reliant on their private-owned vehicles. Therefore, they are unwilling to make alterations to their lifestyle by converting their mode of transport to public transport as majority of them reckon it as inconvenient and less conducive. Consequently, people rather find alternatives in an attempt to acquire the combustibles by any necessary means, which intricately lead to an escalation in petrol smuggling across borders. For instance, citizens from Thailand and Singapore are willing to take risk of getting apprehended in order to obtain petrol from Malaysia that is cheaper in contrast to the two countries. As a result, environmental predicaments not only cannot be tackled in an effective manner, but also negatively impacted neighbouring nations’ economy and prosperity.

Furthermore, all the endeavours in a bid to save the environment will be in vain without having public awareness about the issue. This is owing to the fact that citizens are not able to fathom the motive of the authority to implement such measures that have affected their convenience and welfare. For instance, there are several riots and demonstration that occured in Asian countries such as Indonesia and Bangladesh thanks to the abrupt increase on petrol price that have caused an enormous burden to the citizens’ daily expenditure. Therefore, instead of taking drastic measures imminently, public awareness should be cultivated via several methods, such as formal education and community campaign. For example, the significance of protecting the environment and aftermath of the environmental issues should be taught in all educational institutions in order to raise cognizance among public.

In conclusion, on account of the heavy dependence of society on personal vehicles which can lead to an increase of illegal smuggling across countries, as well as the need to advocate the public about environmental issues prior to any measures taken, I fully disagree that the best way to tackle the problem is by addressing the price of petrol.
