It is sometimes asserted that letting individuals take the driver test on a yearly basis is the most effective way to enhance the safety of road transport. I, however, totally disagree with this thought given the waste of resources that it may cause and the unwanted factors potentially arising during the operation of vehicles.
Firstly, operating annual driving tests can, to some extent, make resources, such as time and money, wasted. This is because when forced to take the test annually, those who are employed will have to spend a great deal of time as well as financial allocation regardless of how challenging this could be. For instance, supposing an entrepreneur, who is always preoccupied with running his business, allocating an amount of time and money just to take the test annually, his establishment would be seemingly at the cost of failing. Therefore, these negative ramifications may render the fact that holding the annual driving test on a yearly basis harmful.
Secondly, forcing drivers to retake the exam every year for the sake of the improvement in road transport safety is to overlook unforeseen accidents that go beyond driver’s control. Take Vietnam as a prime example. Many traffic accidents taking place in Vietnam are due to the existence of potholes on roads, which is mainly because of the lack of road maintance.
Thus, there are more viable alternatives proving to be more superior. One of which is the enhancement in transport infrastructure, which can also help improve the traffic flow. Another optimal method would be the installation of surveillance CCTV to ensure that those using private vehicles do not breach the traffic law. This has proved to be effective in Vietnam, where drivers running red lines will pay hefty lines, contributing to a decrease in car accidents.
In conclusion, I would argue that it is futile to let individuals sit the yearly driving test for the improvement in transport safety, and several feasible methods like repairing potholes could be implemented by the government to tackle this problem.
