Crime is an evergrowing concern among people. It has an impending effect of fear upon everyone. In this essay, I will discuss on the opinion that some people have about whether the best option to reduce crime is death or not.
I agree that some crimes are grave to the extend that to satiate the hearts of victims and their families procuring a death penalty for the guilty would be the reasonable option. Though, from an humanitarian point of view, the criminal is also a human being and going through death penalty, directly or indirectly, is same as killing.
Furthermore, there are few sects in society that resonate with notion that there better alternatives than death penalty such as rehabilitaion programs, occupational therapy and prolonged isolation. On the other hand, keeping in mind the safety of citizens, for some violent and gruesome cases where these programs fail, death penalty might be the viable solution to send message across, in order to reduce crime. However, in my opinion, by providing ample rehabilitaion and counselling sessions to the guilty, crime can be reduced. Psychologically, only people who are hurt tend to project that trauma onto others.
In conclusion, to reduce crime, death penalty is not the optimal way. It is best to nip it in the bud at early stages when families, teachers and community leaders as a whole can assist those who show early signs of criminal behaviour by taking preventive actions and formulate programs to divert their criminal mentality to creative one. Life is gift in itself and every person deserves chance to repent and start over.
