Whether it is the responsibility of the government or individuals to ensure a healthy diet has been the topic of ongoing debate. This essay will discuss both views and argue in favor of the latter.
On the one hand, the government has the power to positively influence people’s diets. Firstly, by subsidizing healthy food, the government can encourage more frequent consumption of this food category. Secondly, they can also implement laws related to health and safety concerning the practices of restaurants. This could include forcing the use of high-quality ingredients, or requiring transparency around nutritional information. Thirdly, the government also has the means to educate and raise public awareness regarding the important role of a healthy diet in health. As a result, when people are more aware of how their diets affect health, they might be more motivated to improve their dietary habits.
On the other hand, I believe a person should be responsible for their diet due to several reasons. Firstly, since everybody is different, their nutritional requirements likely vary as well. For instance, some people might thrive on a 2000-calorie diet, but for others, this amount may not be sustainable enough. Secondly, people also differ in terms of their fitness goals. Some people might want to become very lean and thus may decide to eat a diet high in protein and generally lower in calories, while there are other people who are not too concerned with their physique.
In conclusion, governmental control of people’s consumption might help them have a balanced diet, but I believe people should be allowed to consume whatever they want.
