While a school of thought holds that the government should play a paramount role in encouraging citizens to maintain healthy diets, others believe that individuals should take responsibility for this issue themselves. This essay will discuss both perspectives, as each has its own merits.
On the one hand, the government should be accountable for promoting healthy diets among citizens. Stricter regulations on harmful foods and beverages could control excessive consumption. For instance, if the government raises taxes on alcohol and sugary drinks for health reasons, people may be less likely to buy them frequently. In some Asian countries, low taxes on these products lead to higher consumption rates, as people are not discouraged by the affordable prices. Furthermore, governments must create more access to healthy foods. In this day and age, clean and organic foods are much more costly and harder to find than fast food and processed foods. As a result, people tend to consume the cheaper and more convenient options. If the government enacts laws and policies to subsidize fresfresh fruits, vegetables and organic products, public health will improve significantly.
On the other hand, many residents argue that we should be responsible for ourselves. Individuals have different needs regarding their health condition. For example, some people require eating foods rich in fiber, however, others need to eat more protein to maintain good health. Therefore people should have their own right to choose what kind of foods are good for their well-being. So government control is unnecessary since the healthy diet create by government may not work for everybody. On top of that, many people are of the opinion that dietary choices are a matter of personal freedom. Individuals should have the autonomy to decide what they eat without government interference because they are the ones who are responsible for their own diets. They believe eating should be an enjoyable experience, and happiness is more paramount than too rigid meals.
In conclusion, while the government should play a role in promoting healthy diets
through policies and increasing accessibility to safe foods, individuals should ultimately be responsible for their own choices. From my perspective, a combined approach can effectively address public health concerns while respecting personal freedom.
