In contemporary society, some people believe that the basic purpose of education is to make a person who is able to find employment. I disagree with this statement, and I think that education serves a broader purpose than simply providing employment. Education helps an individual become a respectable and noble person and benefits society in one way or another.
On one hand, it is common in our society for people to pursue education to improve their career prospects. There is truth to this statement, as we see most of successful individuals are more likely to be degree holders, a fact that compels most people to pursue education for their personal success. For instance, after finishing high school, most students will look forward to pursuing higher education in fields that are in more demand, for the purpose of securing stable jobs. Such opportunities allow individuals to become financially independent and support their families. From this perspective, education is an important means of achieving economic security and improving one’s standard of living.
On the other hand, most think that the main purpose of education should be to develop individuals intellectually, emotionally, and morally. In primary school they not only teach subjects that are designed to make adolescents more intelligent but honorable and virtuous. For example, in schools they not only teach children about science or arts, they teach them about ethics, history and social studies. These subjects help them learn basic social norms. They are also subjected to certain protocols like time management, communication with teachers and their behaviour towards each other. These experiences ultimately help students develop these qualities and become better members of society.
In conclusion, it is undeniable that education is a key to success, yet I think that the sole purpose of education should not be personal achievements, but for an individual to become a respectable and noble person who benefits society in one way or another.
