Band 6+: Some people think that using traditions as attractions for money-making will destroy our culture, but others think that there is nothing wrong with attracting tourists that way. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

A contentious debate surrounds the notion of utilizing cultural practices for making money, with some people arguing for detrimental effects on culture, while others emphasizing attracting tourists that way. This essay will delve into both viewpoints and furnish an in-depth analysis before articulating my personal stance.

On the one hand, it is understandable that attracting tourists through time-honoured practices inevitably poses some threats to our culture. With constantly escalating demands of tourists, traditions, therefore, are modified to satisfy them, which is at the cost of authenticity degradation. Moreover, tourists tend to bring their culture to the hotspots they visit, resulting in the mixed culture. As a result, original characteristics of traditions are eroded. Another key rationale for the argument lies in the over-exploitation of cultural practices. In other words, practices are exploited for the sake of commercialization, which makes locals neglect the importance of preserving their customs.

On the other hand, some people deem that using traditions as a way for money-making is not wrong as it brings noticeable benefits. Undoubtedly, the revenue from tourism is very huge, guaranteeing the livelihoods of locals and resources for preserving traditions. For instance, Hoi An Ancient Town which is well known for its vibrant and mixed culture between Viet Nam and Japan attracts thousands of tourists every year, which provides the main income for local residents. Moreover, this money-making method contributes to raising awareness of locals. Take Bai Choi in Hoi An for example. Due to its prevalence, Hoi An residents gradually recognise the importance of Bai Choi in their spiritual life, attempting them to take actions to maintain this practice. Additionally, it functions as a platform for cultural exchange, equipping people with cross-cultural understanding.

In conclusion, from my perspective, using traditions for money-making is entirely not wrong when it contributes to the development and preservation of traditions. Therefore, a balanced approach is prerequisite.
