Nowadays, many urban areas have vehicle-free days, which means that various types of transport such as private cars, trucks, and motorcycles are forbidden in a certain area. Commuters use public transport like buses, taxis, and the metro on that day. Some groups of individuals claim that this phenomenon leads to many drawbacks, while I personally believe that the positives outweigh the negatives.
There are many positive sides of vehicle-free days. One of the most compelling advantages is the improvement of air quality. Because transport is one of the main sources of air pollution, it produces a variety of harmful gases and emissions into the atmosphere. For instance, every Friday was announced as a vehicle-free day in Uzbekistan, and as a result, air quality improved noticeably. Therefore, vehicle-free days have a great impact on air quality and help to avoid some illnesses linked with breathing and lung problems.
In terms of another key positive side, these days encourage a healthy lifestyle. The reason is that people use public transport or choose walking and cycling as a result. In the past, people were obliged to do physical activity. Nowadays, some people have private cars, which means they can go short distances without walking. As a result, the sedentary lifestyle rate has increased. This circumstance may lead to many diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, and others. In short, vehicle-free days are beneficial for people’s health and promote physical activity.
However, there are some negative sides of vehicle-free days. Initially, it may cause inconvenience due to the fact that some commuters may arrive late at school or work as a result of chaos and disorganization in public transport on vehicle-free days. In addition, this policy creates an extra burden on public transport. Therefore, this circumstance may not lead to the intended result if public transport is not well developed. Secondly, vehicle-free days may have a negative effect on some businesses. Since some businesses depend on delivery services, they cannot send goods or products to customers or receive important products necessary for their operation.
In conclusion, although there are many drawbacks of vehicle-free days, the positive sides such as improved air quality and encouragement of a healthy lifestyle outweigh the disadvantages.
