Band 8+: some people think the best way to solve traffic congestion in cities is to provide free public transport 24 hours a day 7 days a week is it good or bad, to what extent do you agree or disagree

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The notion that offering free public transport around the clock is the optimal remedy for traffic congestion in urban areas is a contentious issue. Personally, I do not concur with this proposition and will elucidate the reasons behind my stance.

One rationale in favor of providing 24/7 free public transport revolves around mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Advocates contend that the burgeoning population has led to an increased demand for private vehicles, resulting in heightened air pollution. For instance, India, grappling with overpopulation, has become one of the most polluted countries due to the multitude of transportation methods used. Supporters of this notion argue that making public transport free would incentivize people to choose it over private vehicles, thereby curbing emissions. They rely on the premise that individuals are inclined to opt for cost-effective or complimentary services. While this argument has its merits, it has certain drawbacks that cannot be overlooked.

In contrast, I am of the firm belief that offering free public transport 24/7 is a limited solution that fails to consider the broader implications. Although this may attract more users, it exerts financial pressure on the government budget to sustain such a service. This not only burdens the economy but also diverts funds from other essential projects. A more sustainable approach would involve raising public awareness about efficient vehicle usage. Although it may require time and effort, the long-term benefits would outweigh the immediate gains of free public transport. Additionally, ensuring the quality of service in a free 24-hour transport system would be challenging due to the low wages offered to employees. This could lead to a lack of interest among staff, jeopardizing the success of the initiative. Ultimately, a more comprehensive strategy that combines public education and prudent budget management would yield superior results in alleviating traffic congestion.

In conclusion, while advocating for free 24-hour public transport has its merits, a holistic approach that integrates public awareness campaigns and fiscal prudence would likely prove more effective in addressing urban traffic issues.
