Band 8+: some people think the best way to solve traffic congestion in cities is to provide free public transport 24 hours a day 7 days a week is it good or bad, to what extent do you agree or disagree

The issue of whether offering free public transportation services around the clock is the most effective solution to urban traffic congestion is a matter of debate. In my view, I disagree with this proposition and will explain the reasons for my stance.

One of the arguments in favor of providing 24/7 free public transport revolves around the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Advocates suggest that the growing urban population has led to an increase in the use of private vehicles, resulting in higher levels of air pollution. For example, India, grappling with overpopulation, has become one of the most polluted countries due to the various transportation modes utilized. Proponents of this idea suggest that making public transport free would encourage people to choose it over private vehicles, thus reducing emissions. They argue that individuals are more likely to opt for cost-effective or complimentary alternatives. While this viewpoint is valid, it has certain limitations that need to be considered.

On the other hand, I firmly believe that providing free public transportation services 24/7 offers a limited solution that fails to consider broader implications. While it may attract more passengers, it imposes a financial burden on the government’s budget to maintain such a service. This not only strains the economy but also diverts funds from other essential projects. A more sustainable approach would involve raising public awareness about efficient vehicle use. Although this strategy may demand time and effort, the long-term benefits would outweigh the immediate advantages of free public transport. Moreover, ensuring the quality of service in a free 24-hour transport system could be challenging due to the low wages paid to staff. This scenario might result in a lack of motivation among employees, risking the success of the initiative. Ultimately, a more comprehensive strategy that combines public education with careful budget management is likely to produce better outcomes in alleviating urban traffic congestion.

In conclusion, while there are advantages to promoting free 24-hour public transport, embracing a holistic approach that integrates public awareness campaigns with prudent financial policies is probably more effective in tackling urban traffic issues.
