Band 8+: Some people think the government funding should not be used for supporting art and culture, while others think supporting cultural activities may be beneficial for the population and the culture. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The allocation of government funding is a perennial topic of debate, particularly when it comes to art and culture. Opinions diverge on the necessity of funding cultural activities. Some people believe that investing in the arts is unnecessary, while others think that providing financial support for art and culture benefits both citizens and society as a whole. I fully agree with the latter viewpoint.

On one hand, those who oppose funding for the arts may have some valid points. They argue that there are pressing social issues, such as traffic safety and education, that the government should prioritize. Every day, numerous accidents occur on the streets, resulting in loss of life. A major reason for these accidents is the deterioration of transport infrastructure; thus, governments should focus on constructing new roads and highways to save lives. Additionally, they point out that investing in education might be a better choice. Funding education is a more effective and sustainable way to foster economic growth and address economic problems. By developing a skilled and competitive workforce, national leaders can work alongside scientists to tackle pressing issues.

On the other hand, I support the idea that expenditure on art and culture is not merely a luxury, but plays an important role in enriching people’s lives. Firstly, proponents of funding for the arts rightly argue that such expenditures contribute directly to a country’s economic growth. Investing in culture and the arts creates employment opportunities for artists, craftsmen, and craftswomen. These individuals contribute to the rich cultural heritage and showcase the potential of the arts, drawing millions of visitors and tourists. Secondly, they assert that holding cultural activities fosters a sense of national identity and promotes cultural preservation. Art and culture play a crucial role in shaping national identity, enhancing fidelity to cultural values and instilling a sense of belonging.

In conclusion, while government funding should address social issues, I am in favor of allocating resources for the preservation of cultures.
