Band 8+: Some people think the government should not spend on international aid because there are disadvantaged people in their countries, such as the unemployed and homeless. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people argue that governments should prioritize helping disadvantaged individuals in their own countries over providing international aid. They believe that resources should be used to address issues such as unemployment and homelessness at home. I totally agree with this viewpoint for two main reasons.

Firstly, focusing on domestic issues can lead to significant improvements in the quality of life for citizens. Governments have a responsibility to ensure that their citizens have access to basic necessities, such as housing and employment. By allocating funds to create job opportunities and support homeless individuals, governments can reduce poverty and improve overall societal well-being. For instance, investing in affordable housing projects and job training programs can help reduce the number of homeless people and provide the unemployed with the skills they need to find work.

Secondly, addressing domestic problems can also have long-term economic benefits. When governments invest in their own people, they can stimulate economic growth and reduce the need for welfare programs. A stronger economy means more tax revenue, which can be reinvested into further social programs and infrastructure. This creates a positive cycle of growth and development within the country. For example, countries with lower unemployment rates tend to have stronger economies and can better support their citizens in the long run.

In conclusion, governments should prioritize addressing issues like unemployment and homelessness within their own countries over providing international aid. By focusing on domestic needs, governments can improve the quality of life for their citizens and create a stronger, more stable society.
