Band 7+: Some people think the government should subsidise fruits and vegetables to make healthy food more affordable. Others argue that the government should tax unhealthy food instead. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about the rising consumption of unhealthy food which has become a major public health concern in many countries. While some people advocate in this statement that increasing taxes on unhealthy foods will discourage people from consuming them, opponents argue that high taxation is not an effective solution. In my opinion, these views are convincing, but I completely believe that rising taxes on unhealthy food have become a more effective way to improve public health. The merit of both views will be discussed in this essay.

On the one hand, supporters of higher taxes on unhealthy foods argue that financial measures could influence people’s eating habits. When products such as sugary drinks or fast foods have become more expensive, consumers may be less likely to purchase them. Consequently, people may choose healthier alternative foods which could improve overall public health. Additionally, the extra tax revenue collected by the government could be used to fund healthcare services or public health campaigns which aim to promote a healthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, critics contend that taxation alone cannot effectively address health problems such as obesity and diabetes. Many people may continue purchasing unhealthy food despite the price increases, particularly if they are accustomed to certain dietary habits. Furthermore, higher taxes on food products may place a financial burden on low-income households, who may already struggle to afford basic necessities. For these reasons, the education and public awareness campaigns would be more effective approach to encouraging healthier eating habits.

In conclusion, although imposing higher taxes on unhealthy foods may help reduce their consumption, I believe that broader strategies such as public education and health promotion are more effective in addressing long-term health problems./ a combination of public education and healthier lifestyle promotion would be a more effective approach to improving public health.
