Healthy food is significant for people. A group of individuals believes that the government ought to subsidize fruit and vegetables to make healthy food more accessible. Conversely, others think that the government should tax processed food. I am going to discuss both views and I also believe that the government should give a subsidy on nutritious food.
On the one hand, the foremost advantage of providing healthy food at low prices is that it becomes more affordable for low-income workers. Individuals who are under the poverty line may not buy nutritious food. By helping them, the government provides fresh produce to a wider population. Furthermore, a subsidy supports local farmers and the agriculture industries, strengthening food security and rural economies. Consequently, when healthy options are available at a low cost, there are chances that people will follow a healthy diet on a daily basis.
On the other hand, the merit of charging a tax on processed food is that people may try to reduce thetheir habit of eating it. Asit, as this food not only damages people’s health but also leads to many diseases such as diabetes, obesity, hormonal imbalance, and many more. Therefore, in India, more than 60% of females are suffering from hormonal imbalance. Moreover, the government ought to charge tax and get revenue. This revenue can be used to provide more medical facilities and medicines to individuals.
In conclusion, although the government should charge tax on junk food, giving a subsidy on healthy food has more merits. It improves the dietary habits of local people, and makes fresh produce more affordable for poor people.
