Several people claim that the way of making healthy food is more affordable is that the government should subsidise fruits and vegetables, while others argue that the administration needs to tax unhealthy food. Although taxes can play a significant role, I firmly believe that subsidizing fruits and vegetables is more important.
Undeniably, when it comes to taxes, these actions might strongly impact people. By involving additional payment on unhealthy food, citizens can change their eating habits and prefer to buy healthy food due to high prices. For instance, when people see that the price of their lovely snack was increased, they will start to find other products and find that there are many opportunities to save money and buy something cheaper. Moreover, the government might have a beneficial outcome of this. When people refuse to purchase unhealthy products, life expectancy may increase. Thee government has an opportunity to proud of the country’s quality of life.
Such benefits notwithstanding, I would argue that it would be more helpful to subsidise natural products to make food more affordable. Firstly, fruits and vegetables are often more expensive that fast food. When the government lowers the price of healthy foods, people can afford to buy them on a regular basis. When the price of healthy food is closer to the price of cheap calories, such as chips, candies etc, people have a possibility to choose what is beneficial to their health and not what they can afford in a right moment. Furthermore, when the demand for healthy food is growing, the work in farms is becoming more popular. In the long term, this strengthens agriculture and reduces the country’s dependence on imports.
In conclusion, although taxes might play a significant role in healthy food, from my perspective subsidizing fruits and vegetables will be more helpful for the citizens and for the farmers as well.
