In recent years, as our technology has made many improvements, it has become easier for people to access all kinds of data, which also raises the concern of having too much harmful information including crime reports. Some people believe that crime should not be reported in detail in the media since it may traumatize them. From my perspective, I agree with this statement as it affects both society and individuals, which I will discuss further in this essay.
On the one hand, it is undeniable that having detailed crime documents could bring society various appeal benefits such as raising public awareness for their safety. Indeed, being able to access this information means that citizens can be informed about the incidents around their neighborhood; therefore, they have time to take preventative measures such as installing security systems. Besides, by establishing this information to the public, the investigator of the criminal case may be able to gather valuable data from a witness who read the crime article. As a result, reporting crimes in detail in the media can accelerate the investigation process of an incident, and simultaneously contribute to a reduction in crime rates across various regions.
On the other hand, the drawbacks of publishing detailed crime reports in the media are inevitable. Since cases with brutal factors are not rare, this kind of data could be fearsome for ordinary people to know, making them more anxious about their safety. Furthermore, if the personal information of those involved in the crime is exposed, it may lead to harassment, stalking, or even threats of violence for the victims, which may later prevent others from reporting crimes. Additionally, detailed descriptions of criminal cases could even increase similar cases as some people would like to imitate them, especially teenagers who are highly impressionable. Therefore, reporting details of crimes to the public could be a bad idea as it may create unnecessary fear as well as heighten the crime rate.
In conclusion, mass media has a huge influence on our society, especially on teenagers. Therefore crime news should be restricted to avoid various unwanted problems.
