Some people argue that information about crime should not be broadcasted on TV, newspapers or radios. Although informing people about crime may cause more crimes, I do believe that people should have access to such information as it can increase public awareness about the consequences of crime and to take actions against it.
It is argued that the media is not the place where the public should get to know about crime. They believe this can fuel additional crimes, as is currently happening. Most well-mannered and law-abiding citizens are such mainly because of their upbringing. So, crime news can rarely lead people to lawful life but increases the temptation in others who are prone to commit crime as it has violent nature.
However, I hold the view that news about crime can be helpful to fight against it as it tends to increase public awareness. This can be achieved by informing people about the consequences of committing crime. In other words, the media can show that criminals are sentenced harshly, which allows others to draw appropriate conclusions.
Another benefit of reporting criminal scenes can be most people increase carefulness and try not to be the victim of crime. For example, parents can stay informed about local events and instruct their children on how to react in potentially life-threatening situations. Take the USA as an example, where occasional mass shootings occur at schools. If parents are aware of such dangerous situations, they can teach their children how to protect themselves.
In conclusion, while I understand those who think that showing crime to the public through the media may cause more crimes, it helps increase awareness among ordinary people to be both careful and not to perpetrate crime. Therefore, I believe that the media should be encouraged to report criminal acts.
