It is believed that the Olympic Games have positive impacts on society and different countries in terms of cultural exchange and tourism development. However, I believe that these events have wasted significant budgets that should be used to solve other problems.
To commence with, the Olympic games are one of the most popular sports events in the world; therefore, it attracts many tourists from all around the world that come to support their national team. That may be a chance for them to explore more about the culture of the host country. For example, when Japan hosted the Olympics in 2015, many visitors had a positive view of Japan’s cuisine, costumes and people. Additionally, the event has a positive impact on the economy. It boosts tourism and global recognition for the host family, potentially leading to long-term economic benefits.
However, critics argue that the enormous financial burden of hosting the Olympics outweighs the benefits. Many host cities cost more than the estimated number. For instance, Rio estimated the 2016 Olympics would cost 3 billion dollars. Instead, the final cost was close to 13 billion dollars. Therefore, the city had to cut healthcare and police spending to afford it. Additionally, mamy facilities such as accommodation, stadiums and infrastructures are disrepaired and unused nowadays. Therefore, it may be a high risk for any city to host.
In conclusion, despite having a great impact on the culture and the finance, the event can be wasteful and unnecessary. Instead of investing in the Olympics, these valuable resources can be used to address pressing problems that we are currently facing.
