Band 6+: Some people think watching TV has more negative effects than positive ones. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Nowadays technology, including television, is playing a much bigger role in our daily life than it had ever played. Therefore many people believe that excessive TV usage by children is harmful, while in my opinion, television is really helpful, unless it is overused.

Firstly, while I concede that watching tv may potentially have a negative influence on child’s mind, I believe it also has a great potential of becoming a source of extra information that is not taught at school and is served in a fun way, what can stimulate developing brain and help in enhancing fantasy, as well as vocabulary and general knowledge. Nevertheless, the influence is positive only when parents are supervising the content their child is consuming. For example, these days the amount of scientific tv programs is enormous, and I think younger generation should be encouraged to watch them if it is difficult for them to read books.

Secondly, despite long hours of watching tv leading to health issues, personally, I think that television can assist in having a very relaxing quality time, either alone or with your family. It has been proved by scientists, that activities like watching tv and even the thought of them can increase the level of serotonins and endorphins being produced. Additionally, spending time with your family while watching a tv can help strengthen bonds between members and become a core memory for the younger ones.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree with the claim of tv having a negative influence on children and, vice versa, believe that it can help elevate children’s knowledge and, moreover, result in significant memories and good quality time for them.
