The ongoing debate on where should people prioritise travelling to during their vacations sparks controversy. Whereas some individuals believe that travelling to foreign countries is better due to the fact that it allows travellers to discover new cultures and challenge themselves, others claim that domestic trips are more important, as it supports local tourism and raises awareness of local traditions. I believe both destinations are valid depending on what the traveller is aiming to experience.
On the one hand, travelling abroad is a rich experience because it enables tourists to get in touch with aspects that they have never seen before. Travellers are able broaden their horizons since they can learn about different cultures and habits, such as their cuisine and historical events. Besides, being in a foreign country makes people get out of their comfort zone more easily, forcing them into adapt to new environments. For instance, travelling to another country can be a fabulous way of learning a new language, as we are compelled to speak in order to survive. Thus, international trips allow better self-development as people usually face more challenging situations.
On the other hand, when people travel within their home country, they are able to delve into its traditions and historical sites. Living in a fast-paced world makes individuals pay less attention to their surroundings and their own backgrounds. Thus, if you want to raise awareness of your own culture and history, travelling domestically can be the answer. Moreover, it supports businesses that rely on tourism to survive, such as local guides. Ultimately, helping their families to earn a living and the local economy to grow in the long run.
In summary, both travelling internationally and domestically can be beneficial to tourists during their vacations. From my perspective, if individuals know their goals and preferences, determining the destination is likely to become less complex.
