The phenomenon of spending money on personal occasions is ubiquitous across the world. It is a controversial topic whether it is important or a wastage of resources. I will discuss both viewpoints in the forthcoming paragraphs and shed some light on why I am in favour of latter because is truer.
Many people believe spending a lot on birthday celebration is important for society and young people. The key belief behind this notion is they claim it is a part of the culture. Moreover, it is customary in some sectors to have lavish weddings. To cite an example, some cultures like middle-eastern or Asian, have a week long wedding where they provide free food and accommodation for the guests, making it an obligation for other people to invest huge amounts of money on traditional weddings. While this is true to some extent but in my opinion, this money could be spent in regards to future savings for the couple. In addition to this, get-together contribute towards social events where all family and friend can come together to spend quality time with each other.
In contrast, other believe, this notion as wastage of financial resources. One key point is the capital loss on parties can be used in other meaningful ways. For instance, some parents celebrate children’s birthdays in grand manner; I consider that investing huge amount of capital on birthday celebrations can be used in other manners to support the child in future studies or to open their saving account which can help them in future. Another factor contributing to this notion is, high-status and pompous social status. To exemplify, while couples waste thousands on anniversaries, the same parties can be hosted in the comfort of home, consequently saving resources and on the same time meeting with family or friends.
In conclusion, it is evident from the above discussion; both the arguments are a mixed bag of pros and cons where neither negatives nor positives can be neglected. I my humble opinion, it is important to celebrate occasions as they are a means of meeting relatives an define our tradition, while on the other hand, lavish expenditure should be avoided to reduce pompous scenarios and using resources in meaningful manner.
