Traditional exams often seen as a way to judge a person’s intelligence. Many believe that students who achieve high scores in such tests are more intelligent than others. And I disagree with this statement.
Firstly, writing exams tests only the children’s ability to memories the big measure of information. But it doesn’t test the deep thinking or other cognitive skills of peers. Some students may memorise the information without deep understanding it, yet still get the high score. At the same time students who think critically or deeply may not get the high score in strict exam format.
Secondly, the word intelligence includes not only memorising , but deep thinking, critical thinking , emotional intelligence, and communication skills. This abilities can’t be measured through pen and paper examinations. For example, children can be an excellent at leading the team or an artist, or problem-solver in real life situations, but these strengths are not reflected in this examinations. Consequently, this creates stress and anxiety during exams, which is can negatively affect to the students performance, even for capable ones.
From my point of view, students should be assessed in different ways. Schools can use projects, presentations, class activities, and practical work. Teachers can also check students’ progress during the year. This helps them understand students better and more fairly.
In conclusion, written exams do not truly measure intelligence. Schools need to use different methods to assess students properly.
