Band 6+: Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage about voting systems.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The passage and the lecturer both talk about whether the Phoenicians sailed around Africa. The passage isn’t in favor of this idea ,and gives several points into why it is false however the lecturer rebuts the points given by the passage and proves why the statement is true.

Firstly, the passage states that the ships the Phoenicians used were not durable enough to cross long voyages. The passage says it is unlikely that they were able to withstand the cruel conditions during the voyage. The lecturer denies this idea by stating that the ships were actually very durable and had pieces of metal to make them more durable, the Phoenicians were skilled shipwrights meaning they can fix their ship during their voyages.

Secondly, Africa has a complex and shape which can be difficult to navigate, a notorious example is the Cape of Good Hope which is still difficult to go through in today’s time. The lecturer refutes this point by saying that the Phoenicians were skilled sailors and used various tools to help them. Another argument made by the speaker was that over time the Phoencians established many docks and accepted help from locals to help them navigate through Africa.

Finally, the author states that there were never ay evidence that supports that Phoenicians supported this journey. The speaker rebuts this argument by arguing that many cultures indirectly mentioned the Phoenicians voyage, for example the Egyptians mentioned the Phoenicians in the their drawings ,and so did the Ancient Greek!
