It is generally considered that it should be mandatory for pupils to wear school uniforms. However, some argue that school uniforms limit pupils’ uniqueness and self-expression. This essay attempts to shed light on both perspectives before concluding that I am in favor of the former notion.
On the one hand, it is understandable why some people think that pupils’ freedom of expression and uniqueness are restricted by school uniforms. They argue that many uniforms are no longer appropriate. For example, some schools use white ao dai uniforms from grades 6 to 12, while ao dai is a holiday outfit that is not convenient for the active age group like middle school students. The second reason they give is that uniforms turn schools into marketplaces. A school uniform will include winter clothes, summer clothes, sports clothes, which is expensive because the uniforms have to be changed every year because children grow so fast. However, I believe that wearing uniforms is necessary and all students need to follow the rules because uniforms are clothes used for all students of a school to show equality among students.
On the other hand, there are several compelling reasons as to why I am convinced that students should be required to wear school uniforms. The first reason is school uniforms increase unity among people. It helps students feel that they are part of the school, which facilitates the building of a positive and united learning environment. The second reason is school uniforms help ensure the safety and security of students. For instance, teachers and school staff will be able to identify students easily through uniforms, which reduces the risk of unwanted intrusion into the school. I believe this school of thought is preferable because the most important thing for students is still studying, not expressing themselves through clothes.
In conclusion, while there are justifications for advocating that school uniforms limit pupils’ uniqueness and self-expression, I would contend that wearing uniforms is necessary and all students need to follow the rules.
