In some countries, national parks and open spaces are being converted into gardens where local inhabitants can produce their own fruit and vegetables. While there are both upsides and downsides to this development, I personally believe the disadvantages outweigh the advantages.
Gardening can be advantageous for two reasons. One is the promotion of healthy eating. When people grow their own organic produce, they know how it is produced and can ensure that no toxic chemicals are added to the food. A notable example is that many fruits and vegetables are contaminated with pesticide residues or ripening agents like calcium carbide, which pose serious health risks to consumers, such as harm to the liver and nervous system. Another advantage of having gardens in cities is that it encourages self-sufficiency. This means people no longer depend on supermarkets for natural food when they have the opportunity to produce their own. Thus, it is beneficial.
Despite the positives mentioned above, I believe the negatives of this trend are more significant. One has to consider that this reduces space for recreation and sports. After long and stressful days, people often look for public parks or open spaces with the intention of relaxing with their loved ones or friends. However, when these areas are transformed into gardens, opportunities for activities such as jogging, playing sports, or simply enjoying open green spaces become limited. This reduction in recreational space can negatively affect the physical health and mental well-being of the community. Another disadvantage of having gardens is that gardening often requires physical effort, such as digging and bending for long periods, which can be difficult or even harmful to elderly people. Likewise, busy people who work full-time or students with heavy study workloads may not have enough time to care for plants regularly, which leads to uneven use of gardens in the community.
To conclude, although there are certain upsides to this trend, I believe that the negatives overshadow the positives, as this development poses serious health problems for society.
