Previously, books were the main source of knowledge, whereas now, information is predominantly uploaded to the internet. In my opinion, the benefits of this trend for the average user are greater than the drawbacks concerning reliability.
On the one hand, the internet may contain incorrect information. Unlike books, which must often go through a rigorous editorial and reviewing process, online content can be published by anyone, often leading to the spread of misinformation and false data. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, although coronavirus vaccines had been scientifically proven to be safe and effective, many conspiracy theories relying on manipulated/falsified data on the internet led some people to distrust the medical community. Fortunately, fact-checking initiatives were implemented by social media platforms in conjunction with federal authorities to combat the spread of misinformation and promote accurate information. However, if these awareness-raising efforts had not been consistently maintained and improved, the effectiveness of the vaccines would have been greatly reduced.
On the other hand, the benefits of storing knowledge on the internet for conveniencefar outweigh the aforementioneddisadvantages. One significant advantage is accessibility it provides. In contrast to books, which may not be readily accessible to those in remote or underprivileged areas, the internet allows users access to a vast repository of knowledge, regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic status. This inclusive availability of information helps bridge educational gaps and promotes a generally more informed global population. Furthermore, the internet facilitates interactive learning. Online platforms such as YouTube provide opportunities for users of all ages to engage with dynamic and engaging content, which promotes superior understanding and retention of information compared to passive reading methods.
