People have different views about whether the top positions within an organization are reserved for older or younger individuals. In my opinion, I partly agree with this way of thinking due to some reasons that are explained in this essay.
Proponents of employing the younger leaders point out that they are generally open-minded as they have not encountered many past problems that can hinder their flexibility. Since being an effective leader requires the ability to make flexible decisions and can adjust them based on actual circumstances, then younger people can adapt these roles. For instance, with the development of current economy, especially in service industries, younger leaders may try to adopt novel ideas from employees better, leading to more creative solutions for customers. Furthermore, those who take on the leadership roles, are often required the up-to-date knowledge and information. Since younger people are more newly trained, they can obtain knowledge regarding recent changes, making them suitable to these positions.
Nevertheless, despite advantages of younger managers, the benefits of senior people outweighs its of younger ones. Firstly, leaders of more advanced ages experienced more challenges, helping them excel in any situations. In detail, being top level managers necessitate the capacity to deal with labor market’s issues such as layoffs, employee retention or changing policies from authorities. Therefore, older people who accumulate experiences through several years of working, can make suitable solutions for these issues. Additionally, thank to longer working experiences, senior directors can handle with customers’ needs better and offer superior services for their clients, thereby they create competitive advantages against their rivals.
In conclusion, although younger managers may be beneficial to some extent, I believe that leaders with several working years bring more competitive edges to firms, including internal and external people.
