With the introduction of high-speed internet and a wide range of devices, the way people entertain themselves has been revolutionized and become more accessible for people of different ages. While this shift is a good way to pass the time, I do believe that its harms to both mental and physical health is not overlooked as whole.
Today, many people, undoubtedly, find it easy to relax with the help of electronics. In the modern world where the majority of individuals are struggling to manage their heavy workloads, ever- increasing competition in today’s job market, the availability of online entertainment make the difference. This, in most cases, is accomplished by video games on handheld devices, which make positive contribution to relaxation and unwinding for people with a lot of job and household responsibilities. As a result, they can entertain themselves in anywhere they want and anytime-whether in the morning, late at nights, and even during breaks in their workplaces. This flexibility can eliminate the need for visiting physical entertainment places, such as parks, making the way they entertain easy and saving their time spent in stuck for traffic jams and queues.
Despite these benefits of digital entertainment, in my opinion, people should be aware of its harms on their well- being and societal prosperity. On an individual level, as long as people spend excessive amount of their time in front of screens, the possibility of being obsessed with devices increases, thus causing them to lead a sedentary lifestyle and leaving limited time for active games and healthy exercises. As a consequence, this, in turn, poses a threat for their metabolic function, muscle activities, and vision, making them susceptible to chronic diseases like obesity. From a societal standpoint, this trend destroys the unity among members of a society. If all citizens heavily rely on the handheld devices to entertain themselves, making less time for community gatherings, public activities, and group games, all of which help instill interpersonal values, including but not limited to a sense of camaraderie, collaboration, belonging, and negotiation, it is more likely to compromise bonds, relationships, and interpersonal unity.
To conclude, as much as I acknowledge the importance of the way people relax by the help of online games and engaging apps, in my view, in order to maintain healthy living and coordination among public people should control themselves from excessing usage of online entertainment to some extent.
