Band 7+: The availability of entertainment such as video games on handheld devices is harmful to individuals and to the society they live in. To what extent do you agree and disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the unprecedented advancements in technology, it is much easier for individuals to use portable electronic gadgets for entertainment purposes. Although some see this trend as positive, I completely disagree with this view, and see it as a threat to both individuals and society as whole.

The increasing use of mobile devices as a pastime has various considerable adverse effects. To begin with, it may lead to serious physiological problems. For example, if a youngster plays online games for longer hours without moving too much, they could suffer from back or neck pain, or even cardiovascular diseases. Similarly, spending a lot of time by looking at a device could result in sedentary lifestyles among the members of society, thereby further exacerbating general health condition of citizens. Besides, this tendency not only affects individuals but it also increases the amount of funds allocated for healthcare services. Finally, people will get used to becoming isolated, which could deteriorate their social skills, undermining the sense of togetherness and community.

On the other hand, some people assert that using portable electronic devices as a means of entertainment benefits individuals, especially teenagers. They contend that people can learn how to use technology and become useful in the long-term. To illustrate, young people could learn basic computer programming skills such as C and C+, and this can help them develop a future career. Even though this point of view could be seen as rational to some extent, I believe that one can learn computer skills in courses at school or university better since they are given by experts.

In conclusion, while using mobile electronic gadgets is a good way of to entertain or reduce stress, I think its disadvantages far outweigh its advantages.
