Band 7+: The availability of entertainment such as video games on handheld devices is harmful to individuals and to the society they live in. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The availability of entertainment such as video games is often considered non-benefcial to individuals and societal environment. However, I largely disagree with this view, as I believe that video games can offer significant benefits when used in moderation, despite some potential drawbacks.

On the one hand, it is true that video games may have negative effect if they are misused. Many people, especially young players, can become addicted and spend excesive amount of time gaming. This may lead to reduced physical activity, poor academic performance, and even health issues such as eye strain and sleep deprivation. In addition, some people argue that violent video games could influence aggressive behaviour particularly among children who may not clearly distinguish between reality and virtual experience.

On the other hand, these problems are usually associated with a lack of self-control rather than the games themselves. In fact video games can be highly beneficial for individuals. Many games develop cognitive skills such as, problem-solving, strategic thinking, and quick decision-making. Multiplayer games also encourage teamwork and communication, as players must cooperate to achieve shared objectives. Moreover, gaming serve as an effective way to relieve stress and improve mental well being after studying or working.

From a broaden perspective, video games are also contribute positively to society. The gaming industry is rapidly growing sector that generates employment opportunities in areas such as software development, design, and digital marketing. Furthermore, educational games and simulations are increasingly used in schools and training programs to make learning more interactive and engaging. This shows that video games are not only a form of entertainment but also a useful tool in education and professional development.

In conclusion, although video games can cause problems if overused, I do not believe they are inherently harmful. When used responsibly, they provide cognitive, social, and economic benefits that outweigh their drawbacks.
