Some people advocate that by raising the lower age limit and bringing down the upper age limit of drivers, we could considerably reduce the number of accidents on the road. I believe this to be true as age influences the behaviour of the drivers on the road.
To begin with, if you account for the involvement of young people on the number of road tragic incidents, it is mostly individuals aged between 17-21 years of age. This is mainly because of the lack of awareness of youngsters on the various traffic rules and regulations to be followed on the road. For instance, speeding, road raging and performance of bike stunts are the primary causes of road casualties. Hence, the ignorance of youngsters on road safety will not only risks their own but the safety of others as well. Also, in case of serious mishaps, it will be difficult to endorse criminal proceedings against the person considering his underage.
Similarly, we cannot discount the age factor of elderly drivers, because age determines or indicates the efficiency of the individual. Even though aging can make people more experienced in their driving skills, it can also deteriorate their ability to function properly. For instance, as you get older, you tend to lose your motor skills and eye sight which are crucial for driving vehicles without danger. Memory loss is another factor that makes people above 60 unfit for driving. Also, they might not be informed on the newest updates in automobile technology or change in traffic rules, that restrict them from driving smoothly.
In conclusion, we could reduce a great deal of road catastrophes by lowering the margin of eligible drivers on the basis of their age, as driving habits and physical well-being of the individual are crucial in ensuring road safety and security.
