It is thought that the requirement of food is rising on an unprecedented scale as the population is growing quickly. The current high food demand is attributable to several reasons, and to mitigate the problem, there are solutions that require collaborative endeavors from countries all around the world.
To begin with, the pressing shortage of food resources is ascribed to a myriad of explanations, but the most likely one is that humanitarian disasters are happening in certain corners of the world. This can be explained by the fact that in times of epidemic or wars, the supply chains might be broken, thereby interrupting the imports of food between countries. As a consequence, citizens living in countries without self-sufficiency in agricultural production tend to purchase food supplies in large quantities due to the fear of perpetuation of wars or diseases. Take the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic as an example. At this time, many people were afraid of the potential lack of milk, corn and other staples, so there was then a mentality popular among Vietnamese people these days that if they had not collected sufficient sustenance, their families would have been at risk of starvation. Therefore, this sense of insecurity led millions to the decision of hoarding a large amount of food.
On the other hand, a number of solutions could be adopted to mitigate the aforementioned problem. One of them is for the state to put more investment in the development of the agricultural sector. Particularly, there should be a shift from traditional agriculture to the production of genetically modified food. Genetically modified food, also known as GM food, are food made from crops whose genes have been scientifically changed. As a result, this agricultural method is able to guarantee a considerably higher yield and meet the food demand of the population. A noteworthy example is that some African nations have suffered from famine in the past, but due to the widespread introduction of GM food, they have solved trouble of importing food from abroad.
In conclusion, whenever a country can self-sufficient in food production, dwellers will feel more secure and can stop storing food even in difficult times.
