The best way to make judgments about people is by basing them on the first impression. I do not agree with this statement for two reasons: first impacts reflect only a few segments of people’s personalities, and judging can be reasonably done after a while and right after the first impression.
First and foremost, first impressions do not reflect the entire personality of an individual but only fragments of it. Although most people make judgments based on what they first see in a person’s actions and behaviours, you cannot judge someone solely from the immediate impact they give on you. This is because the personality of people is multifaceted and has multiple aspects that, in the first impression, may not be immediately visible. Imagine, for example, judging a guy as a gruesome person only because he likes to wear totally black clothes. That person may be joyful, sociable, and someone who uses to help others through community-oriented activities instead.
Furthermore, first impressions are not the best way to judge someone because judgements on people are reasonable after a certain period of time. We can assert to know the entire personality patterns of somebody only if we frequently hangout with them, knowing well their tastes, passions and lifestyle choices. For instance, we may develop a belief based on the primary impression that a well-dressed woman who has a charming aura is indeed a lovely person. Still, we could eventually figured out that she went to prison several times and was charged with robbery. A person’s true nature can be seen over a relatively long period through their actions and the choices they have made during their life.
In conclusion, first impression is not the most effective way to know somebodybecause those impressions do not say much about them, and it is necessary to know them better through time. Thus, in order to gain knowledge and therefore have well-rounded judgements on people, we must explore deeper their lives.
