Band 8+: The government and individuals are spending too much money on national celebrations like New Year or festivals. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is widely believed that national celebrations like New Year’s or festivals play an important role in bringing communities together. However, many argue that excessive spending by both governments and individuals on these events is wasteful. Personally, I agree that the money spent on these celebrations is often disproportionate, especially considering other societal needs. I feel this way for several reasons, which I will discuss in this essay.

One key reason for my viewpoint is that the money spent on large-scale celebrations could be better used for more urgent needs. Governments often allocate significant funds to events like fireworks displays or parades, but these funds could improve services such as healthcare or education. For instance, instead of spending on extravagant public events, the money could support public hospitals or provide scholarships to underprivileged students. This misallocation of resources can exacerbate social inequalities and divert attention from issues that truly matter.

On an individual level, people often overspend on celebrations, putting themselves under financial strain. Many spend large amounts on parties, gifts, or luxury items, which can lead to debt, especially for those with limited incomes. For example, overspending on New Year’s celebrations can result in financial stress that lasts long after the festivities are over. While festivals should bring joy, they often promote overconsumption and compromise long-term financial stability.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that excessive spending on national celebrations is wasteful, both for governments and individuals. This money could be better invested in essential services and long-term societal needs. Moving forward, it would be beneficial to reassess how funds are allocated for these events, prioritizing well-being and stability over temporary indulgences.
