The line graph provides information about the quantities of commodities transported by four diverse modes of transport in the United Kingdom over a 28-year period, from 1974 to 2002. Overall, it can be clearly seen that the data can divided into two catagories; one group experienced a significant increase, while the other remained almost constant.
Looking at the first group, it can be seen that highest upward trend was by road, which rose by approximately 30 million tonnes in 2002, compared to the figure in 1974, at 70 million tonnes. At the same time, the lowest amount of goods transported over the period was by pipeline. It started at roughly 5 million tonnes in 1974 and grew sharply to over 20 million tonnes in 2002. Moreover, the quantities of goods transported by water witnessed a substantial variation from around 40 million tonnes in 1974 to 60 million tonnes in 1982. After that, it relatively constant for 16 years, before climbing slightly to about 65 million tonnes at the end of the 28-year-period.
On the other hand, the latter group only consist of the amount of goods transported by train. It held steady at 40 million tonnes for the first four years, after that minor fluctuation for about 20 years, before recovering to 40 million tonnes again in 20002.
