The line graph compares four different Asian countries, namely Philippiness , Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia in terms of their population residing in cities between 1970 and 2040. Units are measured in percentage of total population of those countries.
Overall, all four countries showed an upward trajectory in the past years and their percentages will continue to grow in the future, albeit with varying levels. Of a particular note is Malasia which stood out as a leading country in this category for the majority of the period.
Philippines and Malasia started the period with 30%, and they continued to grow, reaching nearly 50 % in 1990. From this point onwards, city population of Malasia rose drastically, hitting a high of 75% in 2020. However, city dwellers of Philippines dropped to 40% in 2010 before it recovered by the year 2020. Between 2030 and 2040, the figure for city population in Philippines and Malasia will go up constantly, reaching 85% and 55% respectively.
The population of city in Thailand and Indonesia started the period with 20 % and 15% percent respectively and increased gradually by 1990. In 2000, nearly 30% of both countries population were city dwellers. From 2000 onwards, the figure for Indonesia rose consistently, reaching 50 % by 2020, and overtook Thailand which remained unchanged by the year 2020. In the future, the disparity between Indonesia and Thailand will narrow, showing 50% and 45% accordingly in 2040.
