It is considered by some people that the growing number of overweight people affects the health care system, leaving them to deal with the health issues involved, and this can be resolved by getting students to be more physically active in school. I do not agree with this statement.
Firstly, many different reasons can cause excessive weight gain. Some of them, such as mental health problems, which cannot be dealt with by introducing more physical education classes, are very serious issues.
For instance, binge eating is an eating disorder that is overlooked by many people. It affects a person’s eating habits, making them unable to stop even if they want to. Therefore, I do not believe that all overweight people can lose weight if the school system pushes them to do so.
Secondly, not every exercise is suitable for everyone. People have different bodies, and forcing them all to do the same activities may not yield successful results in weight loss. Instead of physical education classes, gym memberships and personal trainers could be made more affordable for those in need. Overweight people should be encouraged to take care of their health, not be shamed for their weight. That is why I think physical education lessons in school are insufficient to solve this problem.
In conclusion, I strongly believe that overweight people should not all be put in the same category. Their needs should be assessed, and they should receive the help they need accordingly, whether it is regarding physical or mental health.
