In today’s society, as individuals’ longevity expands, they have to deal with more amount of work to fund their retirement. Alternatively, people choose to work in their youth. I concede that this is an overall negative development.
The primary disadvantage is that this makes adults value money more than knowledge. Indeed, as adults have an income source, they can fulfill their immediate needs, such as food, accommodation, or recreational activities. In contrast, studying is related to a long-term investment, which consumes time and family expenditure but can only be achieved in the future. Consequently, this encourages students to drop out of academic institutions to pursue money, therefore creating a less knowledgeable society.
Furthermore, adults may be unable to cope with the pressure that a working environment strictly brings. Specifically, these young individuals haven’t completely formed a consistent outlook on life, along with their vulnerable emotions, making them sensitive to criticism. As a result, if adults get criticized by their managers, their self-esteem will be reduced significantly, which may lead to mental illnesses, such as depression or psychological crises.
However, this development also positively results in adults increasing their expenditure. The youth can earn salaries from their occupation, thereby helping them to fund personal bills, and financially support their family.
In conclusion, the extension of people’s expectancy these days means they have to work until an older age to fund their retirement, thus encouraging individuals to start working in their youth. I believe this is a predominantly disadvantageous development because it creates a materialistic society, and increases the risks to the mental health of adults. Nonetheless, adults can foster their expenses as they have a personal income.
