Band 9: The increasing reliance on online communication has led to a decline in face-to-face interactions, particularly among young people. What problems does this pose, and what steps can be taken to encourage more personal communication?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The increasing reliance on online communication has significantly reduced face-to-face interactions, especially among young people. While digital platforms offer convenience and speed, this trend also creates several social and psychological problems. However, there are practical steps that can be taken to encourage more real-life social engagement.

One major problem is the weakening of interpersonal skills. Young people who mainly communicate through social media may struggle with expressing emotions, maintaining eye contact, or resolving conflicts in real-life situations. As a result, they may experience social anxiety and lack confidence in personal interactions. Another issue is social isolation. Although online communication creates the illusion of being connected, it often lacks emotional depth, which can lead to loneliness and mental health problems such as depression.

To address these issues, several measures can be implemented. Firstly, schools and universities should promote group-based activities such as team projects, debates, and sports, which require direct interaction. These activities help students develop communication skills and build meaningful relationships. Secondly, parents can play an important role by limiting screen time at home and encouraging family discussions, outdoor activities, or social gatherings. Creating technology-free zones during meals or weekends can significantly improve real-life communication.

Additionally, communities and governments can organize social events, workshops, and youth clubs to provide safe and engaging environments for face-to-face interaction. Public awareness campaigns can also educate young people about the importance of balancing online and offline communication.

In conclusion, although online communication has become an essential part of modern life, excessive dependence on it can harm young people’s social development. By promoting educational activities, family involvement, and community initiatives, society can encourage healthier and more meaningful real-life social engagement
