Whether the prevalence of utilizing technology devices for communication takes a toll on young individuals’ literate skills is a topic of controversy. From my perspective, I strongly agree that this tendency leads to several negative influences on the youth.
The first reason why I advocate that the detrimental effects of the massive use of technological communication tools is that it can limit people’s practical abilities such as reading and writing. It is a fact that, young individuals may be susceptible to over-reliance on technology. With the advent of wireless connection, teenagers tend to use their phones or computers to keep in touch with their friends and families instead of conventional interaction. For instance, individuals today may prefer to opting online apps to have conversation with their relatives rather than writing emails or letters. Furthermore, thank to the breakthrough of technology, e-book is increasingly more popular and attractive a numerous number of teenagers, which makes traditionally reading books diminishing tremendously. This trend can make people gradually create a sedentary lifestyle and decline their fluency in writing and reading that are fundamental skills. As a result, they may lose their instinct abilities and be enslaved by technology.
Secondly, technology can have a strong influence on the way that individuals read and write because of its advancement. With the modern revolution in information technology 4.0, people absolutely can be navigated or controlled in logical thinking or behavior by technology. Take students nowadays as an example, they are inclined to use AI such as ChatGPT to do their assignment or homework, resulting in the phenomenon of plagiarism in schools and reflecting unreal abilities of students. Consequently, this tendency may make young people become less creative and underperformance in practical activities. In addition, with the accessibility of the Internet, the trend of reading books to get more knowledge or information may increasingly vanish. For example, in this day and age, if teenagers encounter with exotic or tough task, and unknown information, they will almost always search for them on the Internet rather than reading books to look for. As a result, they may be at the mercy of technology and become more passive in any cases.
In conclusion, though the advancement of technology can bring a multitude of advantages for people’s work and life, I firmly believe that utilizing excessively technology devices for communication should be restricted because people’s literate skills can be affected negatively by this trend.
