The internet has become a huge part of our lives in many different ways. It has also changed the way we interact with other people compared to our ancestors. I will discuss both the advantages and disadvanatges of such phenomenon in this essay.
Using the internet to reach out to other people has been highly beneficial. One reason is that it facilitated communication more than ever and saved a lot of time, instead of having to write something on a paper and wait for the mailman to deliver it, you can easily send the message you want with simple clicks without having to wait a long period of time. Additionally, it made self-expression more convenient, especially for people who have social anxiety or when someone’s afraid of confronting others, as they are not always obliged to discuss serious matters physically nowadays, which helped melt a lot of barriers between people.
However, this also comes with some negativities. Virtual communication lacks a lot of emotion, as it is more difficult to acknoweldge how others are specifically feeling by mere reading. Though things like the tone of our voice, eye contact and face expression effect our understanding of other people’s feelings, they are absent in modern-day interactions due to the internet. Furthermore, it made us more physically distant as we don’t have to see other people for simply anything. Friends can just call each other to talk about a certain thing then hang up, whereas in the past they would meet, greet each other properly and hug, which strengthened their emotional bond.
In conclusion, the change internet implemented on our interactions is both positive and negative, it eased communication and self-expression, whereas it made it us less emotional with others and far from our friends.
