It is often argued that governments should either spend more funds on improving the public transportation systems or increase the production of electric and other types of cars to find a solution for pollution and global warming. Although developing electric and environmental friendly vehicle might be beneficial, I firmly believe that investing more on public transportation is more effective in the long-term.
The public transportation system is more cost efficient and accessible compared to owning a private vehicle. Not only that, it reduces the number of vehicle in the road, which contributes to less pollution and traffic congestion. For example, the authorities in several countries, such as Singapore invested heavily in its MRT and bus systems. Therefore, the majority of Singaporeans tend to utilize its public transportation as it is well-known to be hygienic, safe, and affordable. Consequently, individuals there prefer the public transportation than owning a private vehicle. Thus, this country has a better air quality and traffic congestion as it also contribute less to global warming.
Admittedly, the production of electric and other kinds of vehicle waste less fossil fuels and produce less exhaust, as they rely on electricity. In addition, these cars are increasingly popular in the contemporary society. However, the process of manufacturing these types of vehicle produce more carbon emission which worsen the global warming. Additionally, these cars are not widely available and sustainable as not all countries have sufficient electricity. Moreover, these vehicles may cause more traffic congestion in urbanised countries.
In conclusion, the rapid innovation of new kinds of cars may not lead to a beneficial outcome. Therefore, I strongly agree that the authorities should prioritize more on the development of public transportation system to solve the issue of pollution and global warming.
