Some[1] people believe that news outlets should feature a higher proportion of uplifting and encouraging stories in their coverage. While acknowledging the reasons behind this viewpoint, I partly agree with it, as positive news can uplift the public’s mood and negative news can[2] inspire constructive social behavior.
Good news can act as a motivator, positively[3] affecting the[4] general public. Inspirational[5] figures who are resilient and brave overcome hardships,[6] including those with[7] birth defects and orphaned children. The media expands coverage to highlight the[8] positive attitudes and progress[9] of these people, fostering empathy among those facing similar difficult conditions and encouraging them to make an effort. For example, the[10] media has helped spread positive stories about Nick Vujicic, who was born without arms and legs, has overcome enormous challenges since birth, and has[11] inspired millions of people around the world, proving that determination and a positive mindset can help anyone achieve remarkable success despite difficult circumstances. Thanks to the positive coverage, society has become more understanding and compassionate.[12]
Negative news can educate, raise awareness,[13] and shape positive behavior. Because the media has a wide-reaching influence, urgent issues related to real-world events,[14] such as the fight against childhood[15] cancer or AIDS,[16] or the latest climate changes,[17] can contribute to taking proper actions[18] and raising citizens’ awareness. When negative news becomes more widespread, it helps[19] children and teenagers to distinguish right from wrong, which should be developed, avoided,[20] and criticised in education, habits, and[21] behaviors. As a result, this approach can significantly mitigate various social problems, including poor health, rising crime, and widespread illiteracy.
In conclusion, although some people support the idea of publishing more good news, I would contend that the media should focus on presenting a fair and realistic picture of the world, which includes both the good and the bad.
