Nowadays, more and more people concerned about the safety of road which leads to the controversial point whether harsher penalty deters people from committing road offences and if it is the only way to enhance the welfare of drivers. Although This essay agrees that more stringent punishments conducive to mitigate the imposing concern, I believe that there are also other efficient ways to solve this issue.
Firstly, harsher punishments can act as deterrent to would-be lawbreakers. That means, road users would think twice before committing the traffic offence, as they understand the terrible consequences of their action. For instance, in Kazakhstan, less and less drivers tend to cross the pedestrain, since the price of fines were increased and an abundant number of cameras were embedded. Indeed, the loosely enforced regulations are the main cause to the rise in road casualties and making the penalty sticker can mitigate the aforementioned problem.
Nevertheless, it does not mean that a stringent sanction is the only measure we can take, because rising the awareness of residents is another effective way to avoid committing offences. As an example, if influencers or authorities would became more vocal in the sharing of the hazardous implication of not following the rules while they are driving, persons will have a wider knowledge about the safety of traffic. For the reason that higher up individuals have an influential ability to effect minds of society, so human beings likely to follow their “suggestions”.
In conclusion, this work proves that harsher sanctions are worthwhile, but not the only measurement to deter people from committing the driving offences. An alternative effective way is heightening society’s awareness.
