It is argued that the in order to make roads safer, harsher penalties are required for offenders. Although I admit that imposing harsher punishment plays a crucial role in reducing the likelihood of accidents, I believe that efficient measures should be taken to address this issue.
On the one hand, stricter penalties reduce fewer road casualties. Firstly, punishing offending drivers can discourage reckless habits. When drivers are informed that the consequences are severe, they are less likely to engage in risky behavior such as speeding, drunk driving, and using a mobile phone while driving. Also, fear of further punishment and severe consequences prohibits repeating the same offense again. Secondly, these harsh penalties instill a sense of responsibility and accountability in drivers. Conscious driving behavior and a reduction in lawbreakers stem from a greater awareness of one’s own actions, resulting in more careful and cautious decisions while driving.
On the other hand, I think that broader strategies are required to achieve a sustainable enhancement in road safety. Firstly, boosting individual’s awareness through organizing campaigns and educational programs. These public awareness campaigns use TV, social media, and billboards to educate and inform people, especially new drivers, about the importance of safe driving habits and following traffic rules. Clearly, training individuals in defensive driving can lead to long-term and sustainable changes in their driving behaviors. Secondly, improving the road infrastructure to make sure it meets safety standards and prevent road accidents. This can be accomplished by investing in improved road infrastructure, such as the installation of guard lines and appropriate lights, the implementation of traffic-calming measures in residential areas or near schools, and the enhancement of signage and pedestrian crossings, which can prevent or mitigate collisions.
In conclusion, there are some benefits in imposing strict punishment for traffic violations. However, in my opinion, other actions such as educating people and improving road infrastructure are more efficient in enhancing road safety.
