The debate surrounding road safety has intensified in recent years, prompting many to suggest that the imposition of more stringent penalties for traffic violations is the most effective approach to mitigating accidents and enhancing overall safety. While I acknowledge that stricter punishments can play a role in discouraging reckless behavior, I contend that this measure alone is insufficient; a comprehensive strategy that includes public education and awareness is crucial for achieving lasting results.
It is widely acknowledged that improvements in traffic safety may be achieved if punishments for driving violations become more severe, as it imposes a significant impact on both physical and mental outlay for drivers. This toll may be a major factor that encourages citizens to obey driving regulations, which aids in reducing the dangers of accidental issues. Take Thailand as an example; the accidental index has decreased significantly from 15% to 8% since the government applied penalties for driving violations.
However, there are several ways to keep road safety efficient, such as raising public consciousness, which provides individuals with some practical lessons and experiences while driving vehicles. This valuable knowledge may promote people to be more careful when participating in traffic operations. Therefore, the traffic system can maintain road safety. For example, according to Vietnam’s traffic police department in 2022, thanks to the traffic instructions of several awareness campaigns in 2021, citizens are becoming more conscious in participating in the traffic system by wearing helmets during driving.
In conclusion, while enforcing stricter punishments for driving offenses can contribute to enhancing road safety, it is not a panacea. A multi-faceted approach that encompasses education is essential to cultivate a holistic framework for reducing traffic accidents. Thus, I firmly believe that while accountability through stricter penalties is important, it must be complemented by comprehensive strategies to ensure sustainable improvements in road safety.
