Band 7+: The overuse of plastic packaging has led to numerous problems. Identify one or two serious ones and suggest ways that governments can tackle these problems

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The rampant use of plastic containers as packages has resulted in many issues. In this essay, I will explain problems that have emanated from their use and also ways the government can solve this issue.

Of numerous problems that rampant use of plastic containers has caused, one is environmental pollution, which includes both water and land pollution. These plastic containers are non-biodegradable; in other words, they cannot be broken down into smaller units by microorganisms or other means. When they are disposed of by users, they tend to litter the land and eventually end up in various water bodies like oceans. For example, research carried out by the American Institute of Environmental Studies shows that about 77% of the plastic containers used as packages end up eventually in the oceans, mainly the Atlantic Ocean.

To solve this issue of environmental pollution as a result of overuse of plastic packages, the government should encourage the use of paper-made packaging materials. This will drastically reduce the production of plastic containers for packaging. This can be achieved in the form of tax reduction for the companies that are producing these paper-made packaging materials. By this, even the companies that are producing plastic packaging will eventually reduce or cease production and convert to the production of paper-based packaging materials.

In conclusion, excessive use of plastic containers as various packaging containers has resulted in various environmental problems, most especially land and water pollution. The government can solve this issue by encouraging companies to produce paper-made packaging materials instead, which could be in the form of tax reduction and other incentives.
